What is Rotary?

Rotary is short for Rotary International - a world-wide organisation of over 25000 local clubs and 1.2m men and women members in business or the professions who provide humanitarian service to the community at local, national and international level. We encourage high ethical standards in all walks of life work for peace and goodwill in the world.

Rotary was founded, on the 23 February 1905, by a 37 year old attorney Paul P. Harris, in Chicago, Illinois, U.S.A.  For a history of Rotary click on link.

Rotary gives its members the opportunity to put something back into the community in recognition of what the community has given to those members in their path to success or achievement in their occupation.

Stroud Rotary Club was formed in 1921 and are one of 1500 clubs in the UK. We are one of 62 clubs in Rotary District 1100 which covers Gloucestershire, Wiltshire, Worcester, South gloucestershire and Bristol. We meet for dinner most Mondays at the The Hill Merrywlks Stroud for an enjoyable lunch of fellowship, conversation, discussion, planning of projects and often an interesting speaker. Visitors are always welcome, for location see map.

What do we do?

Primarily we enjoy each others company. From this 'fellowship' comes Service and as we are a group of people with a wide range of interests and experience we are able to use our talents and skills to help those less fortunate than ourselves. Hence our main motto:

"SERVICE ABOVE SELF"

Here are a few activities we get involved in both to raise funds for needy causes and to provide service to our community which is our main aim
